Step 0.5: Run a Pre-Flight Check

Skip the deep dive if:

Step 2: Put a Dollar Value on Feature Delay

Calculations to run

  1. ARR deferral: (Feature ARR ÷ 12) × number of months delayed.
  2. Churn risk: Sum of (contract value × probability of churn) for customers waiting on the feature.
  3. Pipeline impact: Sum of (deal value × probability drop) for opportunities blocked without the fix.

Worked example

Feature X underpins $1.2M ARR in renewals. A two-month delay defers ≈$200k in revenue. Three at-risk accounts worth $45k each carry a 30% churn probability ($40.5k). Two pipeline deals worth $80k each drop from 70% to 30% win probability (another $64k). Total opportunity cost ≈$304.5k.

You expect to reclaim 4 hours/week for each developer (≈$24k/month) and avoid one severity-one incident per quarter (≈$50k from Step 1). Over 12 months, that’s ≈$298k savings against a $192k spend—payback in month 8, ROI ≈55%, NPV ≈$53k at an 8% discount rate.
